Zane Flags Lofty Goals

DURING the week, Mackay’s Zane Wright ensures computers are protected from viruses. But on weekends Zane controls rugby league matches, ensuring they too run without glitches.

Zane’s efforts with the whistle have been recognised at the highest level.

The IT consultant, who has never played a game of rugby league, received the Barry Gomersall Encouragement Award at the recent Mackay Rugby League awards night.

In the last three years, Zane has gone from unfit to dedicated. As a reward, he was selected to referee at this year’s Under 15 national titles in Adelaide.

“My cousin’s wife suggested I do it,” said Zane, when asked why he began refereeing.

“I thought it would be a good way to keep fit and get some extra cash.”

The award was established as a way to honour legendary Queensland referee Barry ‘Grasshopper’ Gomersall (pictured), who passed away earlier this year.

Referees who have officiated a Queensland Cup, FOGS Cup or Colts match are ineligible for the award. It is designed to recognise talented referees emerging in Queensland.

Zane, who started refereeing Under 7s as a 17-year-old, is hoping to rise in the same manner Barry did.

He is eyeing a stint on the touchline when Wizard Cup rookies the Mackay Cutters take to the field next season.

The NRL is something I don’t really think about but Queensland Cup is definitely my goal at the moment, even if it’s an interchange or sideline role,” said Zane.

The softly-spoken Zane rates the U15 titles and being the sideline official for two Arrive Alive cup semi-finals as career highlights.

“The big occasion is what makes it all worth while,” said Zane.

“Running out onto Dairy Farmers in front of a big crowd is pretty exciting.”

If Zane keeps improving, the crowds will only get bigger.
