ARE you an aspiring referee who enjoys discussing the finer points of the game? If so, the QRL referees’ board can steer you to a place where the mention of a “dominant tackle” generates plenty of lively talk.
Referees’ Academy Manager Eddie Ward is encouraging young whistleblowers to attend development seminars across the state in January and February next year.Ward, a former top-level referee who controlled 650 first grade matches, said participants would benefit from the thought-provoking sessions.Along with taking in all the tips in important areas like fitness and communication, the young referees will view footage of Queensland Wizard Cup games. The QRL’s accredited coaches can then highlight key points for discussion from the user-friendly DVDs.
“If we can get them to talk about it and express themselves on what they’re seeing and why they are going to say ‘that’s a dominant tackle or that’s a surrender’, then everyone is going to benefit,” Ward explains.
“I think it’s a better way for them to learn.”
